Have you ever felt like screaming this question from the top of a mountain, in hopes that someone, anyone would answer?
Most of us have been there at one point or another within our life. I have been doing a study throughout the book of Genesis in our Sunday morning class for quite some time now. Each time that I read through this wonderful book, I am reminded of so many who went before me, who endured so much.
It means so much to me that we have contained within the Bible the “full picture.” What I mean by this is that we see the good in people, we see the bad in people, we see the faith that soars higher than the mountains, we see the faithless child of God. In other words, we see many men and women, just like me, just like you. We have our ups, we have our downs. I wanted to share just a few brief things to Sum up the life of Joseph.
- Early in his life, his mother died.
- His father favored him, but his brothers hated him.
- His brothers sold him into slavery.
- He was sold again, this time to Potiphar.
- He became the highest ruler in Potiphar’s house, besides Potiphar himself.
- Potiphar’s wife lied, because Joseph refused to sin with her.
- Joseph was thrown into prison… for doing exactly as God would have him to do.
- Joseph was taken out of prison.
- Joseph was promoted to the “second in command” over the entire land.
- Because of God’s providence, and Joseph’s obedience he was finally re-untied with his once lost family.
Let me ask you, do you envy Joseph? Maybe the answer would be yes, if you were to look at the latter part of his life. But do you envy all that he had to go through to get where he was? If you are like me, the answer is no.
How often, do we look around at the things going wrong in our life (Financial trouble, health problems, pain, death, relationship problems, loss of a job, etc…) and wonder “What is going on here?!?”
I would like to call your attention to 2 passages of scripture for your consideration.
The first one is Romans 9:20-21-But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?
This humbling passage from scripture reminds me of two important things. The first being, I am not in charge, the second being… God is! Even when I have no idea what He is doing in my life, I must have confidence that he has a plan for my life (Jeremiah 29:11) and that His plans are always better than my plans (Isaiah 55:8)
The second verse I want to call your attention to is found back where we started, in Genesis. Right in the midst of the world crashing down around Joseph. When everything seemed to be going wrong in his life. When many would cry out, “Where are you God?” we find the answer for Joseph.
Genesis 39:21- “But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love..”
Even though the world was crashing all around him, God was there. I want to tell you today, even if your world is crumbling all around you, God is with you!
Hebrews 13:5- “…I will never leave you, nor forsake you.”
Great job Troy. Your writing is such a blessing. Keep up the great work.
